Growing Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas are my absolute favourite! They are so pretty and the fact that the more you pick them the more they grow is even better. A woman I used to work with used to put jam jars filled with sweet peas on my desk, and it was the most perfect way to start a working day! I have wanted to grow my own for a while but without a greenhouse thought I wasn't able too. Until that is, I spoke to a friendly guy on a flower stall at the weekend who said I could grow them on the kitchen windowsill, and then plant them out in April/May.

So, here are my sweet pea plants growing on the kitchen windowsill:

They have already grown quite a lot in just a few days, so am going to have to support them with some canes before they go out in the garden.

This is the willow pyramid climber I bought last summer but never used (apart from ornamental), so hopefully this year it will be filled with pretty sweet peas!

I will let you know how I get on. Any tips would be most welcome.

Thank you for reading xx

  1. I love the container you are using for the sweet peas! And your trellis will be a lovely support for them. I also love sweet peas. My grandma has a field full of wild sweet peas and my calico cat is named Sweet Pea.

  2. Sweetpeas are so easy to grow and their scent is amazing! We tend to leave them to grow until they get their fourth set of leaves up the stems, then pinch off the flower, this makes that set of leaves grow another four sets and then more flowers! We keep doing this so the plants become more bushy (more flowers to pick!). As soon as you have any dead flowers, pick them off straight away otherwise the plant tends to stop producing. By the way, love your blog!! Chel

      Thanks again, Tracy x
